The Human Algorithm | Part 01: The Silence in the Hallway

There is a specific kind of silence that follows a "Shift."

It isn’t the peaceful quiet of a Laguna afternoon or the sleepy hush of a Sunday in Iloilo. It is the heavy, ringing silence that happens when a routine—one you’ve spent decades building—suddenly vanishes.

I saw it first through the eyes of those closest to me. One day, you are the expert, the "go-to" person, the one whose rhythm dictates the flow of the office. The next, the rhythm has changed. The algorithm has updated. And suddenly, the hallway you’ve walked for years feels… empty.

The Myth of "Business as Usual"

When we talk about AI and "industrial shifts," we usually talk in numbers. We talk about "efficiency," "displacement," and "optimization." We use cold words like calculus.

But numbers don’t describe the look on a person’s face when they realize the skills they spent a lifetime honing are being performed by a line of code in three seconds. They don’t account for the "phantom limb" feeling of reaching for a task that is no longer yours to do.

The Identity Trap

In my days running a marketing company and leading an IT firm, I saw how much of our "self" we bake into our work. We aren’t just workers; we are the Presidents, the Directors, the Managers.

When the "Shift" happens, it doesn't just take the job; it threatens the identity.

"If the machine does what I do, then who am I?"
"If my expertise is now common knowledge, what is my value?"

Finding the Human Frequency

This first part of the shift is the hardest because it’s the quietest. It’s where most people get stuck—in the hallway, waiting for the old doors to open.

But here is what I’ve learned from my own "wanders" through life: The silence isn't a dead end. It’s an invitation to listen to a different frequency. Before we can figure out what to *do* next, we have to sit with the silence and realize that our value was never actually the task itself. It was the human spirit we brought to it.
