The OFW Advantage
The Experience, Skills and Opportunities We Bring Home
What if the greatest thing an overseas Filipino brings home isn’t something that fits inside a suitcase?
For millions of Filipinos working abroad, the journey is often measured in years away from home, sacrifices made for family, and the money sent back to loved ones.
But there’s something else that deserves our attention.
Think about the skills acquired along the way. The responsibilities entrusted to them. The problems they’ve learned to solve. The systems they’ve worked with, the people they’ve managed, the standards they’ve encountered, and the knowledge they’ve gathered in workplaces across the world.
Some have learned to manage hotel operations. Others have acquired technical skills in manufacturing, healthcare, construction, logistics and hospitality. Some have become experts in household management, procurement, customer service or coordinating complex daily operations.
And yet, when we talk about what happens when these Filipinos return home, the conversation often revolves around finding another job, putting up a small business or settling into retirement.
What if we looked at things differently?
What if we started by asking: What does this person already know how to do? What experience have they accumulated? What problems can they solve? And who might benefit from what they have learned?
That is the idea behind The OFW Advantage.
This is not simply a series about starting a business after working overseas. Not every OFW wants to become an entrepreneur, and not everyone needs to. Some may prefer employment, consulting, partnerships, mentoring or simply sharing their knowledge with others.
We want to explore the possibilities.
Through conversations with Filipinos who have worked and lived abroad, we’ll discover experiences that often go unnoticed, skills that may be undervalued, and opportunities that may be waiting to be explored.
We’ll look at how professional experience can translate into local services, how international connections can open doors, how knowledge gained overseas can benefit Philippine businesses, and how affordable technology can help turn practical ideas into reality.
We won’t assume that every experience automatically becomes a business opportunity. We’ll ask questions, examine the possibilities and consider the challenges, too.
Because the goal isn’t to convince every Filipino working abroad to become an entrepreneur.
It’s to recognize that years of work and experience have value beyond the paychecks earned.
A job may end. An overseas contract may expire. But the knowledge, skills and experience gained along the way don’t have to end there.
Welcome to The OFW Advantage.
Let’s discover what we bring home—and what we might do with it.
